THE SMELLS OF WINTER SOLSTICE
Yesterday marked the longest night and shortest day of the year with the Winter Solstice. This is known to man as the oldest winter celebration, where we honor the rebirth of the sun and the beginning of winter. There are many old traditions that span across many different cultures, but a part of what I like to do, is honor the earth and what it provides. Use the evergreen and balsam fir clippings to dress the house, make the wreath and fill the home with the smells of the season.
It is one of the easiest and oldest ways to warm up the soul on a cold winter's day. Simply take a handful of clippings from the tree, about a tablespoon of cloves, 3 - 4 star anise & a cinnamon stick. Place in a pot filled half way and bring to a boil on the stove. Then reduce to a simmer and enjoy. Keep an eye out and add more water once the winter juices have reduced. You can reuse all week.
